The Many Faces of Motoko Kusanagi
Motoko Kusanagi, also known as "The Major" among other names, is the hero of Ghost in the Shell. The story has gone through a number of iterations, from the original manga by Masamune Shirow from the late 1980's through Oshii's animated movies, the "Stand Alone Complex" and "Arise" animated series, and most recently the live action movie released in 2017. In each, the nature and character of the Major changes to reflect the different visions of the creators of each series, and changing contemporary cultural concerns. In this presentation, we will look at each incarnation of Motoko, how the character is both the same and very different in each way she is presented, and how she reflects changes in both how we view the relationship between technology and society and how we view anime.

Want to learn how to take your cosplay to the next level, but not quite sure how? One of the simplest but most overlooked elements of making a character come to life is, of course, the character themselves! This part often gets overshadowed by flashy costumes, elaborate wigs and large props, but really, it can be what makes or breaks a look, especially during a photoshoot. Their face, skin tone, bone structure, gender identity, etc. is equally crucial to the representation of the character, and we can show you how to bring out those qualities through the art of makeup! For beginner and intermediate skill levels.

Cosplay Dating Game [18+]
18+ Wristbands required.

Ever wonder what it would be like if Cloud Strife dated Usagi Tsukino?  Or, if Eren Jaeger found true love with Ryuko Matoi?!  These matches might not happen, but you never know what wild matches will be made at Zenkaikon's Cosplay Dating Game! Who knows, maybe Deadpool will fall in love with The Borg Queen!

The Cosplay Dating Game is similar to the traditional 'Dating Game' of yesteryear TV. Three bachelors or bachelorettes sit on one side of a curtain. On the other side is the 'prize,' an elusive bachelor or bachelorette for one of the 3 contestants to 'win.' The twist is that participants are in costume and are the character. The prize will ask several questions, which contestants must answer in character. Then “the prize” will choose which date they want. Unlike the real 'Dating Game,' this event is purely for the amusement and entertainment of the participants and audience. No real dating is involved.

Four participants were pre-selected prior to the convention for each session. The other bachelor/bachelorette contestants will be selected from the audience.

Cupcake Party: A Grimdark My Little Pony Theory [18+]
At the intersection of literary criticism and bloody fan works sits Grimdark fiction: dark, disturbing, and reflective of some truly twisted minds. Or is it? This panel looks at some of the major tales and images found within Grimdark MLP fan works and seeks a different interpretation rooted in catharsis, creativity, and entertainment. And violence. Lots and lots of violence.

Evangelion Manga: The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly
Late in 1994, the manga iteration of Neon Genesis Evangelion began its long, slow, irregular run in Shonen Ace magazine. It finally concluded in the summer of 2014, and during the two decades it was in sporadic publication, numerous other Evangelion manga series popped up to fill the void. Their quality may vary, but the important thing to keep in mind is that there is one where Shinji is a detective who solves mysteries, and one where the children play video games to secretly train them for the battle ahead. For better or for worse, this panel will bring you up to speed on all that you've missed.
